History of the East Ghana Conference of SDA

A noble idea of organizing a Festival of Faith in the region eventually materialized through the effort of pastors. Pastor R.Y. P. Amponsah and AYA Briandt-Coker, who were the district pastors for Suhum and Koforidua respectively. They were asked to help with the necessary arrangements for the program by contacting Pastor Adu Twumasi-Ankra then Chaplain of the S.D.A. Teacher Training College now College of Education to seek permission for the program to be held at the college’s dining hall.

Pastor Kwabena Twum who was the Stewardship Director for our mother South Ghana Conference was invited as the Guest Speaker for the program and Pastor N. L. Thompson’s permission was sought as the then Youth Director of the mother South Ghana Conference to assist.

Interestingly, the first program which started as a Festival of Faith later turned out to be an impressive Prayer Conference involving almost all the Pastors in the Region. The joy, unity and testimonies that emanated from this prayer conference ignited the quest for greater works for the Lord in a more organized way that should give birth to a new field in the SDA church in Ghana.

Observations of these programs won the heart of Pastor P. O. Mensah, the President of then Mother South Ghana Conference who met pastors and all church Elders in the Eastern Region on the idea of the need to create the Eastern Region Field. The idea was overwhelmly embraced by brethren in the east and an interim management committee was formed in 1997. Pastor S. A. Amfo Snr. Was the Chairman, elder M. E. Duodu as vice chairman, elder Acheampong Obimpong was the Secretary and Eld. Enoch Agyei Darko as the Treasurer. Later Pastors Adu Twumasi Ankra and Pastor R.Y.P. Amponsah were invited to join the committee.

Eventually, the Eastern Region field was created in 1999 with the name East Ghana Administrative Unit. Pastor Kwabena Twum was the Director, Pastor Adu Twumasi-Ankra as Secretary and Elder J. S. Akomeah as Treasurer. Pr. R.Y.P. Amponsah as one of the Associate Directors in the office of Personal Ministries.

By the special grace of God and hard work from pastors and laity, the Administrative Unit was able to fulfill all the policy requirements needed for her to be granted a Conference status within a period of six (6) months and the name East Ghana Conference chosen. Names of the officers elected were: Pastor Kwabena Twum-President; Adu Twumasi Ankra-Executive Secretary; elder S. M. Ansah Treasurer; Pastor S.A. Amfo Snr.-Ministerial Secretary.
